That constant juggling act can leave us feeling drained, leading to a diminished spark for the things we love.
It’s essential to understand that balancing the two doesn’t mean giving up on one in favor of the other. Instead, it’s about harmonizing both, ensuring that neither your creative pursuits nor your responsibilities are neglected. This is something I’ve struggled with and have learned to navigate over time.
1. Shift the Mindset: Creativity Isn’t a Side Hustle, It’s a Priority
One of the biggest shifts I’ve had to make is treating my creativity as a priority, not something I squeeze in between obligations. For many of us, creativity takes a backseat because it’s not directly tied to immediate survival, like paying bills or taking care of family. But what if we started seeing our creativity as vital to our well-being, much like food, sleep, and connection with others?
Give yourself permission to prioritize your creativity. For me, that meant creating a set time during the day, even if it’s only 30 minutes, to dive into something creative, whether it’s drawing, podcasting, or designing. Protect that time fiercely, just as you would a meeting or doctor’s appointment.
2. Set Boundaries and Manage Your Time Intentionally
We’ve all heard the advice about time management, but in reality, it’s less about managing time and more about managing ourselves within time. We can’t create more hours in the day, but we can use the hours we have more intentionally.
One tip I shared in the episode is the importance of setting clear boundaries. When it’s time for work or family, be present in that space, but when it’s time for creativity, honor that too. Avoid letting the lines blur by answering work emails during your creative time or thinking about a project when you should be resting.
Use tools like calendars, planners, or apps to block out your day. I often break my day into chunks: mornings for productivity, afternoons for creativity, and evenings for family. This doesn’t always go perfectly, but having a rough structure helps ensure that each part of my life gets the attention it deserves.
3. Combine Creativity with Your Responsibilities
Sometimes the best way to maintain creativity is to merge it with your daily tasks. If you’re cooking dinner, can you turn it into a creative experiment with new recipes? If you have a family, can you involve them in your creative projects? For example, my kids sometimes help me with art or design projects, turning what could be a responsibility into a shared creative experience.
Look for areas where your responsibilities can fuel your creativity rather than drain it. By involving your creative mind in routine tasks, they become more fulfilling, and you’ll feel less like you’re missing out on creative time.
4. Be Gentle with Yourself: Perfection Isn’t the Goal
When trying to balance creativity and life’s responsibilities, perfectionism is your enemy. There will be days when your creative plans don’t go as expected because life simply happens. Maybe you had a whole evening planned for writing, but work ran late, or you had to tend to a family emergency. That’s okay. The goal isn’t perfection but consistency.
One thing I’ve learned is to be flexible and not beat myself up when things don’t go according to plan. If I can’t get in my full creative time one day, I’ll make up for it later or adjust my expectations for the week. Creativity should flow, not be forced, so remember to stay adaptable and kind to yourself in the process.
5. Incorporate Self-Care to Fuel Both Creativity and Productivity
We often underestimate how much our physical and mental well-being impacts our ability to stay creative and productive. If you’re constantly running on empty, neither your creative side nor your responsibilities will get your best. That’s why incorporating self-care is crucial.
Get enough sleep, eat nourishing foods, and make time for exercise. Even something as simple as a walk outside can do wonders for clearing your mind and helping you reset. Taking care of your body and mind will ensure you have the energy and clarity to manage everything on your plate and still leave room for creativity.
6. Surround Yourself with Supportive People
Last but not least, having a support system is a game-changer. Surround yourself with people who encourage your creativity and understand the importance of it in your life. Whether it’s family, friends, or an online community, having people who cheer you on when balancing responsibilities with creative pursuits can make all the difference.
In my case, I’ve found a tribe of creative souls who remind me to keep going when I feel overwhelmed. They help me stay accountable, and their encouragement motivates me to keep nurturing my creativity even when life gets busy.

When You Feel Like Giving Up (But God Isn’t Finished Yet)

Life gets heavy. People leave. Things break. And sometimes, no matter how hard we try to smile, it still hurts. I know what that feels like—because I’ve been there too.
The Silent Fight
There were days when I looked okay on the outside—hair done, smile showing—but inside? I was drowning.
I thought I had to be strong all the time. But the truth is, I was hiding.
Hiding the grief.
Hiding the shame.
Hiding from a voice that kept whispering, “You’ll never be enough.”
But here’s the truth: That voice is a lie.
You Are Not Alone
“The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”
— Psalm 34:18 (KJV)
According to the CDC, suicide is the third leading cause of death among Black youth ages 15 to 24. That’s not just about death—it’s about silence. It’s about unspoken pain and the fear of being judged.
But God sees you.
He hasn’t forgotten you.
And He’s not finished with your story.
Your Life Still Has Purpose
Even in your lowest moment, there is still purpose in your life.
I remember being 16 and pregnant.
Alone. Ashamed. Judged.
I thought about ending everything.
But then… my baby kicked.
And I knew in that moment:
God still had plans for me.
A Gentle Reminder for Your Soul
Speak this over yourself right now:
“I may feel broken, but I am not beyond repair. I am still here. And God is not done with me.”
Say it again. Say it out loud. Let it live in your spirit.
You Are Still Here for a Reason
You don’t have to be perfect.
You don’t have to have it all together.
You just have to keep breathing. One moment at a time.
God doesn’t need you to be strong. He just wants you to be honest.
